A question that popped out of every Filipino’s mouths, who are in disbelief after watching the Philippine Diving Team’s embarrassing performance in the 28th South East Asian Games in Singapore a couple of days ago.
As soon as the videos were uploaded on the internet, it immediately went viral. People from all over the world made fun of the Filipinos divers, posting hilarious comments, jokes, and memes in almost every social media. Not everyone was had a happy day though, as there were also people who sympathized with Fabrigas and Pahoyo. Some even took time to defend the divers from their bashers.
The Filipino divers actually started well in their earlier rounds of the competition. Fabriga and Pahoyo’s first three dives actually did not disappoint. Then things started to fall apart from there on. In their fourth dives, Fabriga was not able to get enough altitude from his jump as landed on the water back-first. Pahoyo, who shortly followed, seemed to have slipped from the springboard as he fell feet first into the pool. Malaysia, Indonesia, and Singapore were the medalists of the aquatics tournament, while the Philippines placed fifth with 309.39 total points.
Despite the disappointing outcome, both divers were still proud of what they have accomplished. Shortly after their competition, Pahoyo and Fabriga were quick to brush off their forgettable performances, as well as the comments of fellow-Filipinos on social media. Pahoyo shared his sentiments on his Facebook account, and his words were full of optimism.
“I’m so proud of us pakner John Fabriga, we really did our best despite of we just practiced this synchro dives for just 4 days, even though we failed to win, but atleast we did overcame what we once knew was out limit, and that makes us a champion”
He also thanked their coach for all his hard work and efforts
Pahoyo did not stop there. He later reposted a video of their successful dives, then asked the netizens if they could share those videos too, to let everyone know that they really did not perform horribly the entire competition.
A very resilient tandem that has yet to reach their primes, the 21 year old Fabriga and the 17 year old Pahoyo will surely bounce back in the next competitions that they will join, and they hope to not only make the Philippines proud, but also become viral for all the right reasons the next time around.
